VOLUNTEERING EXPECTATIONS
Each family will volunteer for both the team and for the league. At the team level, you can choose from ongoing roles and/or one-off events tied to races, activities, etc.
At the league level, you can choose from a variety of roles including ongoing, or most often, our parents choose a volunteer spot at one of the races.
TEAM VOLUNTEERING
When registering your rider, each parent will be asked to join a Parent Volunteer Team and contribute approximately 5 hours of volunteer time over the course of the season.
Examples of Team Volunteer Roles:
- Race Day Food & Support (prep and serve food for athletes at races)
- Pit Zone Setup & Teardown
- Trailer Management
- GRiT Support
- Communications & Media (photography, video, social media)
- Practice Support (post-practice chocolate milk, assist coaches, ride leaders, etc.)
We also have two required events we need your help at each year:
- Trailer Cleaning (you’ll be assigned by last name) – this will take place at the High School in place of one of the practices
- Trail Work Day (May 17th, 2026) – the whole family is invited for a morning of improving the trails we’ll use throughout the season. It’s a great opportunity to get to know each other outdoors at the beginning of the season.
If you’re also volunteering as a Ride Leader, we truly appreciate the time you’re already committing! We’ll do our best to assign you a smaller role within your Parent Volunteer Team to keep things manageable.
LEAGUE VOLUNTEERING
In addition to team volunteering, the NICA league depends on parent volunteers to make race days happen. The minimum requirement is one race-day volunteer shift per parent, per rider, per season. So if you have two riders on the team, each parent would need to volunteer for two shifts.
Volunteer sign-ups for NICA race days will be sent out a few weeks before each event. There are a variety of roles available, including parking assistants, course marshals, crossing guards, merch tent support, set-up/tear-down crews, and more—there’s something for everyone!
If you’re unsure where you’d be most helpful, our Team Volunteer Director is happy to help match you with a role that fits your skills and schedule. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions—and thank you in advance for helping make our team such an incredible community!
RIDE LEADERS
Ride Leaders are parent volunteers who ride with the team during practice. If you’re a cyclist (or want to be), this could be a great fit for you! Ride Leaders must register through NICA (background check required). See Coach Registration for details. Our ride leaders also get special discounts from participating league sponsors in case you needed a little more motivation.
